Twitter has a system which sends out 'tweets' through the internet much like the mobile phone which can send out Short Message Services. It is so heavily used that it is sometimes called the SMS of the internet.

Twitter's usage spikes during prominent events. Like when the record was set in the Fifa world cup there were nearly 3000 tweets being posted every second and this was only for 30 seconds after the Japan scored. This record was surpassed again several times but the record never broken after American singer Michael Jackson died.

Twitter was ranked as the eleventh most visited website in the world by a monthly report from Alexa's monthly survey of web traffic.

There are nearly 190 million accounts created on twitter but one person could create 2 accounts so the number could be half or less
